2.Korean Popular Music and Yodel (50-60s)

▶ Between the 5th and the 60th - the country and the yodel from the US troops

After Independent and the Korean War, US troops are stationed in South Korea. At that time, the most talented singers in Korea were brought to US troops.  So after independent, the first yodelers in Korea also appeared in US troops. In the US Army unit, 자니킴Johnny Kim(김광식Kim Kwang-sik) sang Hank Williams' Lovesick blues by a team called "Western Jubilee", 김형진Kim Hyung-jin played the violin in the "Grand Ole Opry"- Western Jubilee was renamed. 전항Cheon-hang sang "Chimbell" by English and he did yodelings also. A female singer named 김해경Kim Hae-kyung from the "Grand Ole Opry" appeared on TV and her yodels became known to the Korean public as well.

Since then, 서수남Suh Soo-nam appeared. He has been a vocalist of Western Jubilee. In 1964, he formed a country folk group called "아리랑브라더스Arirang Brothers", which played an exquisite combination of the guitar and harmonica. Not just overwhelming throughout the country at his day, but he has been active all the time until the 1980s and has been active in popularizing country music in Korea, and is still active as a soloist.

Among his many country songs is the song "사나이a Man of Men", which is a song with Korean lyrics on Hank Williams' 'Long gone lonesome blues'. This song has been played since the 60s, but the release of the album is relatively new to the 90's, but it seems to be the first country yodels in Korean languages.

Suh Soo-nam 's best (1990) , 'A Man of Men" is on this record.


Suh Soo-nam has left another yodel known as "Mountain is the better". In this song, we can listen cool yodel by 하청일Ha Chung-il, his duet partner. The song's originated by 'Trizem Yodel' by the American vaudeville singer Grandpa Johns', and "Mountain is the better' is still popular among a lots of Korean yodel clubs.


In addition, we can find yodels in "The Song of the Ranch" (1960) by Song Min-do & Kim Sisters singing in Korean popular songs in 1960s.
